Project RED training a success

On Saturday August 15th, the River Alliance of Wisconsin provided training to educate local volunteers in identifying and documenting the distribution of invasive species that threaten Wisconsin waterways. Milwaukee Riverkeeper and Trout Unlimited helped to host this event at the Wauwatosa Public Library. We learned how to identify 15 different invasive species that threaten the biodiversity in Wisconsin waterways.

The species were grouped into four categories: 1) wetland plants (Japanese hops, common reed grass, Japanese knotweed, Purple loosestrife), 2) emergent and submerged plants (flowering rush, hydrilla, curly-leaf pondweed, Eurasian water-milfoil, Brazilian waterweed, didymo), 3) snails (New Zealand mudsnail, banded mystery snail, Chinese mystery snail) and 4) mussels (zebra, quagga).

The volunteers were very enthusiastic at the training and asked many questions. With the help and support of our volunteers, Milwaukee Riverkeeper is better equipped to help fight the spread of invasive species.
