Common Council Approves Milwaukee River Protection Ordinances

Milwaukee Riverkeeper and our partners on the Milwaukee River Work Group have been continuing to work hard on passing the Milwaukee River Greenway Overlay District legislation, which will protect over 8 miles of river, floodplain, and riverfront habitat from the former North Avenue Dam to Silver Spring Road.

Milwaukee's Common Council approved three measures Tuesday aimed at protecting the upper Milwaukee River from invasive development.

Now the people who generated that legislation are moving on to the next step in improving the area along the river north of the former North Ave. dam: adoption of a master plan that spells out trail development, habitat restoration, canoe and kayak access, and other improvements to the corridor.

Milwaukee Riverkeeper was recently showcased in the Journal-Sentinel as part of a lengthy feature covering the many river-related restoration projects going around the Milwaukee area.  Along the banks of all three local rivers, Milwaukee Riverkeeper and other community agencies are doing their part to restore our precious waterways.

Waukesha delivers lake water request to DNR

Milwaukee Riverkeeper and other environmental groups continue to monitor Waukesha's application for Lake Michigan water.  This is the first application of its kind since the Great Lakes Compact was passed.

Milwaukee Riverkeeper is especially interested due to Waukesha's proposed return flow of the treated wastewater via Underwood Creek.

Waukesha - Water Utility Manager Dan Duchniak drove to Madison on Thursday and hand delivered the city's request to buy Lake Michigan water to state Department of Natural Resources officials, beginning a lengthy review process requiring approval of each of the eight Great Lakes states.

The application proposes diverting up to 10.9 million gallons of lake water per day after 2035 to serve an estimated 97,400 residents, as well as businesses and industries. In 2009, the city's average daily demand was 6.8 million gallons.

Milwaukee Riverkeeper Recognized as Outstanding River Organization

On Saturday, May 1st Milwaukee Riverkeeper celebrated 10 years of the Department of Natural Resources' river grant protection program at the Spring Confluence of River Alliance of Wisconsin.

At the event, Milwaukee Riverkeeper was recognized as one of the outstanding river organizations in the State, and was presented with a "DECADE OF RIVER SUCCESSES" award, as well as commendations from State Assembly and Senate representatives, including Sandy Pasch, Michael J. Sheridan, Anthony J. Staskkunas, Jon Richards and Jeff Plale.
