Our Education & Sustainability Director\, Leah Holloway\, will conduct a brief lesson on paddling the rivers downtown; then paddlers will take to the river to explore. Kayakers should return to the dock by the end of their scheduled time slot. \nPaddles will kick off the at the Milwaukee Kayak Company Schlitz Park dock (1555 N. Rivercenter Dr\, Milwaukee\, WI 53212). Participants can expect to be on the river between 1-2 hours with no restroom access along the way. \nChoose the ticket cost that works best for you and receive a coupon of equal value to use toward future Milwaukee Kayak Company kayak rentals. You’ll learn about the critical role mussels play in maintaining healthy rivers\, their fascinating life cycle\, and the key characteristics used to identify different species. Participants will then take to the water to explore native mussel habitats alongside an expert and contribute valuable data to the WDNR’s Wisconsin Mussel Monitoring Program. Volunteers will also be trained on how to use the iNaturalist app to document and share their findings directly with the WDNR. \n\nNote: Mussel surveys must take place during periods of low water. DESCRIPTION:Events\nSmart Salting Workshop\nRegister \nDescription:\nMilwaukee Riverkeeper is inviting winter maintenance professionals to participate in a free Smart Salting Workshop led by the Wisconsin Salt Wise Coalition. The event will be held in UWM’s School of Freshwater Sciences (600 E Greenfield Ave).  \nParticipants in this workshop will learn state-of-the-art winter maintenance practices\, including transitioning to liquid deicers and reducing overall salt application. The course concludes with a Smart Salting Assessment. Participants who successfully complete the exam will earn the Smart Salting Certification.  \nThis workshop is part of a larger effort\, supported by the Fund for Lake Michigan\, to increase awareness of the impact of winter deicing activities on local waterways through Milwaukee Riverkeeper’s public education and monitoring work.
