During this training\, we will review the protocol for timed surveys\, data collection methods\, tips & tricks\, and how to submit data to the statewide effort. Our target area for 2026 is focused on the Menomonee River Watershed. During the second half of the training\, we will enter the stream and complete a timed survey as a group. Please indicate your wader size on the registration form\, or plan to wear shoes for wading. \nFollowing this training\, volunteers will be equipped to complete timed surveys independently or as part of small group at designated sites within the Menomonee River and its tributaries. Milwaukee Riverkeeper staff will also discuss how to coordinate future timed surveys. \n\nNote: Mussel surveys must take place during periods of low water. DESCRIPTION:Events\nSmart Salting Workshop\nRegister \nDescription:\nMilwaukee Riverkeeper is inviting winter maintenance professionals to participate in a free Smart Salting Workshop led by the Wisconsin Salt Wise Coalition. The event will be held in UWM’s School of Freshwater Sciences (600 E Greenfield Ave).  \nParticipants in this workshop will learn state-of-the-art winter maintenance practices\, including transitioning to liquid deicers and reducing overall salt application. The course concludes with a Smart Salting Assessment. Participants who successfully complete the exam will earn the Smart Salting Certification.  \nThis workshop is part of a larger effort\, supported by the Fund for Lake Michigan\, to increase awareness of the impact of winter deicing activities on local waterways through Milwaukee Riverkeeper’s public education and monitoring work.
