SUMMARY:Smart Salting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Events\nSmart Salting Workshop\nRegistration Full \nDescription:\nMilwaukee Riverkeeper is inviting winter maintenance professionals to participate in a free Smart Salting Workshop led by the Wisconsin Salt Wise Coalition. The event will be held in UWM’s School of Freshwater Sciences (600 E Greenfield Ave).  \nParticipants in this workshop will learn state-of-the-art winter maintenance practices\, including transitioning to liquid deicers and reducing overall salt application. The course concludes with a Smart Salting Assessment. Participants who successfully complete the exam will earn the Smart Salting Certification.  \nThis workshop is part of a larger effort\, supported by the Fund for Lake Michigan\, to increase awareness of the impact of winter deicing activities on local waterways through Milwaukee Riverkeeper’s public education and monitoring work. This year’s Sturgeon Moon will peak late in the evening of August 27th\, into the early morning of August 28th\, and will coincide with a partial lunar eclipse. \nJoin us for an early evening paddle in downtown Milwaukee\, leading up to the rising of the Sturgeon Moon. Along the way\, you will learn about the lake sturgeon that were once plentiful in our area; the important social and spiritual connections to Indigenous communities; and the progress of efforts to restore sturgeon populations after decades of overfishing. \nMeet us at Milwaukee Kayak Company for a brief orientation before we hit the water for an evening of storytelling. This guided experience is a great opportunity to learn about culture\, history\, and ecology while enjoying a beautiful evening on the Milwaukee River. \nAll gear is included with your kayak rental.
