Mussel Monitoring and Relocation with the Wisconsin DNR

DATE

August 14th, 2021 | 9AM – 12PM

Join Milwaukee Riverkeeper and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource’s Mussel Biologists at Covered Bridge Park in the Cedar Creek subwatershed to learn more about our native mussels and participate in a mussel relocation project. At this event, you will learn about mussels’ critical importance to our waterways, their unique lifecycle, and what characteristics to use to help identify them.  Participants will learn how to identify and make observations using the iNaturalist app, which uploads data directly to the WDNR’s Wisconsin Mussel Monitoring Program. Data collected from this project will help us better understand the population health of this threatened group.

Volunteers are welcome to help with a mussel relocation effort at this section of the Cedar Creek; scheduled reconstruction of the bridge at Covered Bridge Road may impact mussels in the waters below. We need your help moving mussels upstream. The mussel relocation will include: collecting all live mussels, identifying, counting, and moving them upstream, out of harm’s way.
