Stream Sensor Kayak Tour | Milwaukee Harbor | August

DATE
Monday, August 20, 2018

TIME
5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

HOSTED BY: Milwaukee Riverkeeper & Clear Water Outdoor

Due to the predicted rain storm, we must unfortunately cancel tonight’s paddling event.

We’re so excited to announce another summer of paddling events with Clear Water Outdoor! Paddle along with Milwaukee Riverkeeper staff as they collect data on equipment that UW-Milwaukee School of Freshwater Sciences Professor Dr. Matt Smith created. Dr. Smith developed a low-cost sensor that can be used to measure stream height.  Matt’s students have shown that this sensor can work in the lab, and now we want to see if it can function in the field.

The sensor will be installed at a site near the Cherry St. Bridge in downtown Milwaukee. Milwaukee Riverkeeper will be working with kayakers to test the sensor by measuring the distance between the sensor and the water’s surface on several different occasions.  While at the site we will take additional measurements including water depth and stream velocity, and then we will calculate the discharge of the river. Following the paddle, we will walk to Milwaukee Ale House to discuss our data. Join us!

Please bring a flashlight or headlamp!
