Freshwater Field Hours: Mussels of the Milwaukee River
Description:
Join Milwaukee Riverkeeper and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources mussel biologist Lisie Kitchel — a renowned conservationist — for a hands-on mussel survey in the Milwaukee River Watershed!
This informative session will take place on the main branch of the Milwaukee River at Hubbard Park. You’ll learn about the critical role mussels play in maintaining healthy rivers, their fascinating life cycle, and the key characteristics used to identify different species. Participants will then take to the water to explore native mussel habitats alongside an expert and contribute valuable data to the WDNR’s Wisconsin Mussel Monitoring Program. Volunteers will also be trained on how to use the iNaturalist app to document and share their findings directly with the WDNR.
