I approach nature from a spiritual perspective, recognizing that when I care for nature, it cares for me in return, both physically and emotionally. Through this painting, I want to share this connection and invite others to experience it for themselves. The glowy, transparent figures represent anyone, anywhere, participating in the care of the environment. They symbolize a collective responsibility that when we nurture our earth, a shared glow emerges that connects us all.

Nicole Shaver (she/her) grew up along Lake Michigan, where she skipped rocks and watched fisherman gut salmon as a child. Largely inspired by ideas of place and belonging, she researches geographical sites and employs them as metaphorical compasses to navigate the space between reality and fantasy, the banal and the sublime.

She received her BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her MFA from the University of Iowa.  She has attended artist residencies in Colorado, Iceland, North Carolina, Ohio, Portugal, Vancouver, and Wisconsin, while exhibiting widely throughout the United States and Scandinavia.  Her work has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered and published in New American Paintings and Studio Visit Magazine.

She maintains a painting studio in Saukville, Wisconsin, shoots 35mm film, runs, swims and throws rocks when permitted.

Nicole will be sharing wood panel paintings from her Coastal Collages and Water Paintings collections.

Piece Details: The diptych “Two Fishermen” is an observation of the 2025 Milwaukee River salmon run and its importance as a marker of seasonality in the city. It celebrates the perseverance of natures rhythms that find a way to blossom even within environments explicitly hostile to their existence.

Sara’s passion for all things fused glass began over fifteen years ago after participating in a beginner’s class at a local glass shop. She quickly purchased her first kiln and began taking as many in-person and online classes as she could find, learning new techniques and experimenting with color, texture and design. Her pieces reflect her love of discovery and the joy of turning glass into something vibrant, layered, and full of light. “Splash” is fused glass.  I was inspired by the splash made by a fish jumping upstream in the Milwaukee River.
Dimensions are 14″ x 10″ wide and 4″ in height.

“River Currents” evokes the ever changing colors reflected in river water as it moves and flows.
Fused glass, 12 1/2 height by 15 1/2 width.

“River Riffles” is done with multiple layers of fused glass to give it the look of water riffles going over rocks and pebbles in the shallows of a river.
9 1/2″ height by 11 1/2″.

Mike is Milwaukee Riverkeeper’s Communications and Outreach Specialist. Growing up near Cedar Creek helped inspire his love for the outdoors. Mike has hiked hundreds of miles, throughout the United States and beyond, and enjoys helping others connect to nature and discover parks and other public lands to explore. He is presenting a series of photographs taken mostly in the Milwaukee River Basin but entirely within Wisconsin.

Maura is presenting her North American rug hooking. Rugs are made by pulling loops of yarn or fabric through a stiff backing material, such as burlap or linen. A hook mounted in a handle, usually made of wood, is used to pull the loops through the backing material. These rugs are made using sustainably-sourced natural fibers and are inspired by some of Mike’s photographs. Maura will also be demonstrating on-site during the Gallery Night event.
